The Children of Men

Greatest movie I’ve seen in a long time. Fricken’ great.

The year is 2027 and all women are infertile, no baby has been born since 2007 (or something). The world is also in chaos, England being the only civilized place. People are constantly trying to get into England but get rounded up and shipped out of the country in big steel cages.

The movie is just really freakin’ well done. All the futuristic sh*t was very subtle and very believable. The sets were mostly dystopic but very realistic, looked like something you might see in a craptastic neighborhood in in NYC or something. Except the refugee camp, it was awesomely horrible. Run down buildings and people squatting in burned-out school buses and corrupt guards and broken windows and gun-fights and armored tanks. It was just freakin’ cool! And the special effects were amazing! The movie had to have been at least 1/3 CG, but you couldn’t tell, everything looked completely real.

If you think you might want to see it, don’t read any reviews or watch the trailer, they give away a pretty big plot twist.

I’m too lazy to blog a blog for everything I did over break

I figure I’ll just make a summary post with details about everything. First and foremost, I posted about 10 days worth of pictures on my pictures site, /pictures/.

Here are some nice pics of Stephanie washing dishes and me making tea. The “artistic” nature of the images is due to me getting my new digital rebel and trying out a few things with it. Mo betta pics will be coming as I get better with both taking pictures and editing them with The Gimp.

On December 22nd I drove home to Iowa. The trip was pretty uneventful, but I did get the opportunity to wail on my dad in Cribbage and get my butt whooped in pool.

Christmas eve was rather uneventful, what with my dad in the hospital for a (thankfully not incredibly serious) twisted intestine and my Grandpa and Grandma sitting out due to an outbreak of the flu. The gift exchange went well, though my 4 pounds of Cheez-It didn’t go over as well as I’d hoped.

Christmas day was also anti-climactic. Mandy, Paul and I made some coffee, opened some presents in the morning, then drove into Cedar Rapids to visit my dad and give him our presents. Mandy and I went in together on a nice jacket for him, since he’s had his current windbreaker since I still lived at home, back in 1998. He was due for an upgrade. Later that day we went back home and made Paul wrap dad’s gifts for Mandy and I. From Mandy I got a very nice pair of Sony sound-canceling headphones, from Dad I got a Tomtom ONE navigation system. I’d never used sound-canceling headphones before, and let me tell you, they’re a weird experience. You flick that switch and all of a sudden everything gets silent, it’s very odd. The navigation system that my dad got me kicks a whole bunch of butt. I think the best part is probably that all the data is stored on an SD card and you can easily download Point of Interest databases online and drop them on the card. I now am capable of finding every Krispy Kreme donut shop on the United States.

NYE was spent in Chicago seeing Umphrey’s McGee. I had a great time at the concert, highlights would be the Steely Dan cover of My Old School. Not only was the cover impeccable, but the lighting during this song was fabulous, best I’ve seen at any show, I’d say. I’ll post a pic once I find one. For now, here’s an image of the LASER light show. UM really pulled out all the stops this year.

Do you see all those blue glowing lights in the audience? Fricken digital cameras dude. Everybody and their brother has one now, I think.

Oh….one last picture. This one is of the bathrooms at the Aragon. They were…..awesome. Right when the countdown started I ran downstairs so I could be taking a poop in this stall right at midnight. I also called Stephanie.
