Why is our border security retarded?

I don’t understand the point of searching people’s laptops.
Completely aside from the privacy issues, these types of searches have no point. Everything that could possibly be stored on a hard drive can be easily accessed over the nets, so what, exactly, are we protecting our borders from?
It’s like not allowing people to carry toothpaste through airport security, but then letting your friend just throw it over the gate to you. Why even bother with the first restriction since it doesn’t do shit and just inconveniences travelers?
